Island History
Bermuda’s story starts back in 1505, when Spanish explorer Juan de Bermúdez first charted the islands that now carry his name. A little over a century later, in 1609, the English ship Sea Venture wrecked on Bermuda’s reefs on its way to Virginia. The crew’s time on the island was so remarkable it inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and that shipwreck became the beginning of Bermuda’s permanent settlement.
Over the years, the island has evolved into something completely its own. A blend of British roots, West Indian rhythm, African heritage, and Portuguese influence. It’s an island where afternoon tea and cricket meet calypso music, pastel houses, and a laid-back pace that’s impossible not to love.
You’ll see that spirit everywhere: in the vibrant Gombey dancers who fill the streets with drums and color, in Cup Match, and even in the architecture. Those iconic white limestone roofs built to catch rainwater, a design born out of both beauty and practicality.
